Welcome to Eating From First Principles!
Australia is coming out of COVID-19 lockdown and yesterday (6th June) marked the day the gyms were allowed to reopen after Federal Government-mandated closures that saw every gym in Australia closed for 11 weeks.
Like most Australians, I have not found quarantine to be particularly beneficial to my physical wellbeing. I started the year with grand plans of losing 10 kg in 2020 (on 1st January I was 79.7kg and 178cm). I had ten weeks of going to the gym 4-5 times a week and just as I was starting to see changes in my physique the gyms closed. I am still the same weight that I was almost six months ago but I’ve lost all the definition that I earned at the beginning of the year.
So, I find myself today at a point where I have had a weekend where I have eaten a packet of Mint Slice biscuits, a packet of Double Coat Tim Tams (both found in my quarantine stash that I’d forgotten about), a bag of microwave popcorn, a bowl of ice cream, plus some other bits and pieces. Not really a weekend to be proud of and not surprisingly, I am not feeling great. I feel over full, bloated and just icky. It’s time for this to stop.
I’ve never been a diet person. The idea of trying to live on boiled eggs or low calorie shakes sounds like my idea of hell. Any strict eating regime, such as veganism or keto, also sends chills down my spine. I love food: I love red meat, I love seafood, I actually don’t mind most vegetables, I love fruit but I still shudder a little bit at salad greens.
However, as I am less than 12 months away from 40 and don’t want to enter the best years of my life not knowing how good I can feel if I exercise right and eat right. As someone who has studied mathematics and physics at university, I have spent a lot of time proving concepts from first principles. Naturally, it seemed logical to apply the same process to getting on top of my fitness and nutrition.
So here we are, it’s time to start Eating From First Principles. Join me as I try and motivate myself towards the gym and away from the pantry, researching what I eat as I go and try to develop an eating philosophy that lets me decent quantities of yummy food, feel better physically and is beneficial in all aspects of my life.
Maybe my journey will inspire you on your journey as well.
All the best,
Angela
